Schuurlo Castle

During the second half of the 18th century, Petrus Volckerick was the first to build a dwelling and a farm on the Schuurlo land, which belonged to the Mérode family at the time. The estate then comprised 72 hectares of woods and arable land.

The property was owned, managed and rebuilt by several different families during the estate’s history…

The castle and surrounding woods suffered a great deal of damage during the First World War.

In the post-war epoch, in 1920, the estate was bought by Baron Charles Gillès de Pélichy, who set about rebuilding a neo-Gothic style castle (photo). It remained the property of the Gillès de Pélichy family for three generations. The ownership passed into the hands of the Van Parijs family a few years ago.
