Mariasteen Castle

Mariasteen

This castle was built for the first time in 1906-1907 by the Baron and Baroness Charles Gillès de Pélichy.

It was destroyed by German troops in 1918 then rebuilt after the War in the form it now exhibits today.

It was occupied for a second time by the Germans, but only for a few hours, towards the end of the Second World War.

It was liberated by the Allies on 7 September 1944 in the wake of a fierce battle. It is now being used as a school.
